Our House: Design I Build: Post 3: Uh Oh

"What are we missing here?"...

I can answer that one in a later blog post, or maybe several, because yes, there was a lot missing, or, maybe put a better way, a lot that we missed. But I digress...

We pulled up to a dead-end, next to a wooded area at the back corner of an established neighborhood. A lone trail wandered off into the woods, disappearing around a bend. A quick look at Google maps and we realized the lots must be down that trail, so off we went.

A minute or so later and we were in the midst of a picturesque forest, standing on the lots, with no visible signs of the other nearby houses. It felt like a hidden oasis within the city. A small hill crested in the center of the lots, flanked on each side by a gentle slope. A large stream, we later learned is called Dancing Creek, flowed further down the hill. Standing on the lots looking down the hill and across the trail, the large wooden tract in front of us was city park land, a tract we knew that could never be developed.

So here we were, on a vacant lot with huge, mature trees, within the city, and surrounded by park land. Again, what are we missing here?? It doesn't matter, it's five lots! Maybe we can design five amazing houses and develop them all! Maybe we can save the center lot for a house of our own! Let's make an offer!

Walking back to the car...

...on the same picturesque, winding trail we hiked in on, we decided to make an offer. The next several days included all the normal nonsensical conversations about future goals and dreams you have during times like this. It's a time to throw caution to the wind, forget about all the trial$ and tribulation$ that might lie ahead, and just imagine the possibilities. It's fun, and we all do it from time to time, I'm just as guilty as anyone. It was a lesson for me, and one that I'd heard before and did my best to ignore....that once you're emotionally invested in a situation it's hard to make the correct decision. I spend so much of my professional time helping others make informed decisions on their building projects, and maybe, just maybe, if I had someone in my ear saying "No way, are you crazy" I would have listened. But as you might guess that person wasn't there, or maybe I just didn't listen to them? My apologies if that was you.

So without getting into the minutia of the deal, which included some back-and-forth offers, within a week or so we had our offer accepted, and we were off to the races, or again, so we thought.
